I love all the many benefits that there are in home schooling! For instance, the flexible schedule that you can have, working at your kids pace instead of trying to keep up or having to go a slower pace than needed. You can focus on your child's weak points and spend one on one time working out specific problems.
One of my favorite benefits of home schooling would definitely be the field trips! Ever since we started schooling our kids at home, we have visited some wonderful places. This year has been no exception.
For the past few years, we have started out our school year with a bang by taking a trip to ocean city with my parents. We find some neat places along the way where we can learn a bit about the history of our state and then we hit Thrashers French Fries for a yummy lunch, play on the beach for a little while and then head home.
This year was no exception. We had to go on our trip a little later than usual since my parents were gone for 5 weeks touring America coast to coast for their 40th anniversary, but we still got to start our year off with a bang! (Boy those fries are good!)
While we were waiting for my parents to return from their trip across the country, we managed to take a trip to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. We went during the public school systems second week in school. This early in the year, they weren't scheduling any field trips so we basically had the zoo all to ourselves!
Last week we took a trip to two different places. The first place was definitely geared toward my younger children. Clark's Elioak Farm is a neat little place that originally started out as a children's petting zoo, featuring farm animals. It now has a new attraction. Do any of you remember The Enchanted Forest? It was a children's park that was based around Mother Goose's nursery rhymes. I went there as a child and have many wonderful memories there. Unfortunately, back in 1989 I think, there was a huge fire at the park and they never reopened after that. This little farm has managed to collect the remnants from the Enchanted Forest and are restoring them and placing them around their farm. I was able to watch my kids enjoy some of the same memories I had as a child.
After a picnic lunch at Centennial Park, we headed out to Washington Monument National Park. This is where the first monument ever built to George Washington is still located. You can take a small hike up the mountain and actually go up inside the monument and see a fantastic view of Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia from the top.
I am looking forward to our field trips throughout this year and encourage all you home school moms to take advantage of the benefits of schooling at home and take those field trips! Not only is it educational, it gives you a wonderful break from the daily routine and time to make some memories with your kids!

I have to say, I grew up in Howard County going to Enchanted Forest - what fun memories! I also grew up with a girl whose Mom and stepfather own Clark's Elioak Farm, so it's been fun to watch them restore some of my favorite childhood memories.
